Reconnecting with one's senses:
a simple and powerful key to calm the mind
What if the gateway to more serenity was... in our five senses?
In sophrology, the connection to the senses is an essential tool to anchor us in the present moment and set aside overwhelming thoughts, stress, and anxiety.
Feel the texture of a fabric under your fingers, the scent of coffee or a scented candle, the sound of soft music or even of silence.
By focusing fully on these simple sensations, you give your mind a much-needed break.
Our senses directly connect us to the "here and now."
However, stress and ruminations often stem from our projections into the future or our memories of the past.
Returning to what we see, smell, touch, taste, and hear is like gently bringing the mind back to the present.
An easy exercise to try
Close your eyes, take a deep breath... Then open-them and mentally name:
3 things you see
3 sounds you hear
3 smells you perceive
3 tactile sensations (clothing, temperature, support)
This exercise, seemingly simple, helps to calm restlessness and regain more regular breathing.
Whether you are a new mom, a student during exams, a working woman or in the midst of menopause, or even a company concerned about the well-being of its teams, this accessible practice can become a valuable ally in everyday life.
Want to go further?
Sophrology offers many techniques to develop this awareness of the senses and cultivate a peaceful presence, even in a busy life.
Upon waking, sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths through the nose.
Let the air fill your lungs and swell your belly, then slowly exhale through the mouth, as if releasing all the accumulated tension.
A few minutes of conscious breathing can:
gently awaken the nervous system
soothe the mind
and refocus before the day's momentum
Tip: try heart coherence for an immediate calming effect.
Even before coffee, give your body a glass of warm water or herbal tea.
Herbal infusions gently awaken the body while promoting digestion.
Drinking something warm in the morning helps to:
kickstart the metabolism,
hydrate after the night,
create a feeling of coziness and gentleness
Take a notebook dedicated to your morning thoughts.
Write three inspirational sentences:
they can be positive affirmations, gratitudes, or clear intentions for the day.
examples:
“Today I choose gentleness.”
“every step counts, even the smallest one”
This simple act acts like an emotional GPS: it guides your mindset and helps you return to your intentions when the day gets hectic.
